Why Now?

Hi, I’m Maria Quiñones Sánchez, candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia. For the last 14 years, I served as City Councilmember for the 7th District. From gun violence to rising property taxes to decreasing city services, we need to use everything we’ve got to help our city. I’ve been working on Philly’s frontlines for 30 years and I know how this city operates. But I can’t make the changes I know we need to make unless I’m in tune with the people — and that’s you. That’s why I invite you to sign up to allow us to start a conversation. I believe that when people band together around a shared vision for the city we love, anything is possible. Let’s do this, Philly.

In City Council, I'm known for driving results.

My Story

I am pragmatic progressive – driven by my unwavering passion for helping vulnerable people in need. I moved to Philadelphia from Puerto Rico as a baby. My mom was a factory worker and my dad, a farmworker. I was raised in public housing before moving to Hunting Park. I went to Jules E. Mastbaum Area Vocational Technical School and Temple University. Growing up in North Philly, I began my life’s work of empowering neighbors and fighting for grassroots social change. Now in City Council, I am the Chair of the Approriations (budget) and Education Committees, and Co-Chair of the Special Committee on Poverty Reduction & Prevention. I’m known for tackling impossibly complex problems, uniting leaders with opposing views, and getting things done.
